Wayanad is worth the trip

Now why travel with your family to a hill resort tucked away in a corner of Kerala? The answer is that the trip here itself is worth it. Wayanad is a green, cool, and scenic paradise. It is one of the most loved tourist destinations in Kerala and you get to stay in some of the most wonderful Wayanad resorts like Morickap. The verdant valleys, dense woods, and abundant flora and fauna make the region around Morickap spectacular and something that one must not miss, especially if you are a nature lover. Nature has an amazing capability to rejuvenate us and lift our spirits, uplifting our spirits and making us happier.

Wayanad is not just a destination, it is the hub from where you can visit a dozen other interesting tourist locations, indulge in adventure activity and have a lot of fun. There are lots of things you can do like going on jeep rides through the forests, take jungle treks along trails and reach some little-known jungle stream or a small waterfall all to yourself. You can visit ancient and majestic temples, view tranquil lakes and of course, go on bird and wildlife watching trips. You can also visit the vast tea, coffee, and spices plantations.

The travel itself is interesting

From Bengaluru, the drive to Vythiri is just about six hours. You pass through many small towns and through valleys to reach the hills and travel through dense forests, and close to rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. Each moment is exhilarating and will be a great adventure for children.

While the Bengaluru – Mysuru route is dusty and passes through many small towns, the highway is pretty much good and the drive is easy. Once you reach Kerala, the roads are trickier and the traffic will be higher. However, the scenery will have you engrossed in the drive. The lush green fields and much of the road having trees on both sides providing shade makes the ride very interesting.

Road trips are great fun

Road trips make kids forget their mobile games and laptops. They get to see a lot of new places and enjoy interesting food along the way like fresh sugarcane juice, tender coconut water, freshly coal-roasted tender corn cobs with spices and butter, toasted peanuts, and more. The hotels alongside Karnataka and into Kerala have many popular roadside hotels serving much loved vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. It is interesting to savor the fish and chicken curries on both sides of the states and discover the subtle differences in the culinary styles.

Things to check before you start off

Once you have made all the necessary checks on your car and ensured that all the papers are in place, it would be a good idea to check if the pollution certificate on your vehicle is up-to-date. This is one thing that most people miss checking before a long trip. You can also fill up the tanks and check the air pressure on all tires including the ‘Stepney’. Packing some freshly prepared food, juice or any other beverage will help you to overcome stopping for food in the early stages of the trip and help you get away from the city outskirts at the earliest.

On the wild side

You will have to pass through two wildlife Sanctuaries and that experience itself will make your trip a worthy one. On the Karnataka side is the Bandipur Tiger Reserve and National Park which has a growing number of tigers, wild elephants, spotted deer, and bison along with antelopes, wolves, monkeys, and more.

On the Kerala side is the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary which covers, the four ranges of Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga, Kurichiat, and Tholpetty. Here too you can see all those animals. However, the chance to meet the wild elephants is very high.

Fun things to do along the way

Most people prefer to make the trip between March to May as nature is at its best and the temperature is bearable. There are many very interesting and beautiful places to visit along the way. If you take the NH 275, you can reach the Heritage Winery at Channapatna and find out how fine wine is made. The restaurants at Channapatna will be an interesting culinary find. Once you reach Mandya, you can proceed to the gorgeous Barachukki falls close to Shivanasamudra. The burial spot of the famous Tipu Sultan and his family is along the way at Gumbaz in Srirangapatna. Once you reach Mysuru you must certainly visit the Brindavan Gardens and the Amba Vilas Palace. And don’t forget to pick some Mysore Pak sweet.

The most scenic and touristy route to Wayanad is through Mysore and through Muthanga to reach Sulthan Bathery. The other two are Bengaluru – Mysuru – Hunsur- Nagarhole – Kutta – Kartikulam – Mananthavad and the Bengaluru – Mysuru – Gundlupet – Muthanga (Bandipur forest) – Sulthan Bathery routes.
