How the day actually runs
Cruising hours in Alleppey are regulated — boats move between roughly 12 noon and 5:30 PM, then anchor for the night. Motorised movement after sunset isn’t permitted, which is a conservation rule and also the reason the nights are so quiet.
11:30 AM – 12:00 PM. Check-in at the Finishing Point jetty. Welcome drink, usually tender coconut.
12:00 – 1:30 PM. Cruise through the main canal into Punnamada Lake. This is the postcard stretch.
1:30 PM. Lunch on the bow while moving. Eating karimeen while the shoreline slides past is, for a lot of guests, the memory that sticks.
2:30 – 5:00 PM. The narrow canals. Villages, toddy shops, church spires, children waving from the bank. Ask the captain to stop — most will pull over so you can walk a paddy bund or buy fresh prawns from a local for the evening’s dinner.
5:30 PM. Anchor for the night, usually in a quiet backwater off the main channel. Tea and snacks.
6:30 PM onwards. Sunset from the deck. Then dinner, then very little else, which is the point.
7:30 – 8:00 AM. Breakfast — puttu, appam with stew, or an omelette if you’d rather. A short morning cruise, then check-out around 9 AM.
If you’d rather stay dry, day cruises and shikara rides run shorter windows, and there’s a list of add-on backwater activities — village walks, fishing, canoe rides through canals too narrow for a houseboat.
When to come
November to February is peak season. Cool, dry, and the backwaters at their best. Book six to eight weeks ahead for Christmas and New Year; rates are highest and the good boats go early.
March to May is hot but quiet, and rates soften considerably. The water is still beautiful; you’ll just want the AC.
