Here’s a golden opportunity to visit the most enchanting bird habitat in India! A bird lover’s paradise, the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is the very first bird sanctuary in Kerala. The 25 sq. km areas in Thattekad was declared a sanctuary in 1983. The legendary ‘Bird Man of India’ Dr. Salim Ali had surveyed Thattekad and called it the most opulent bird habitat he had ever seen. Nearly 284 species of birds have been recorded at the Thattekad Bird sanctuary including many migratory birds from all over the world.

The Sanctuary lies to the north of the Periyar River, at the foot of the Western Ghats almost at the base of the highest peak of Kerala — Anamudi. The sanctuary is home to 728 species of plants, 284 species of birds, 222 species of butterflies, 52 species of fishes, 39 species of mammals, 36 species of reptiles & 17 species of amphibians.

Facilities

Salim Ali Nature Trail: A guided bird watching trip of the sanctuary. Led by experienced guides, visitors can walk along jungle trails for 1.30 hours on a 2.4 km trail.

Salim Ali Interpretation Centre: A place where you get an insight into the Sanctuary, its bird diversity, evolution, bird anatomy, bird migration, and more.

Medicinal Plants Garden & Nursery: Conservation and promotion of indigenous medicinal plants are done here. Seedlings are also available here.

Orchidarium Cum Fern House: A wonderful opportunity for Orchid lovers to see a wonderful collection of indigenous orchids and ferns.

Butterfly Garden: The garden has a rich collection of host plants and nectar plants nurtured here to invite butterflies and birds.

Animal Rehabilitation Centre: Injured animals and birds are nurtured here where they are given medical treatment and veterinary care and then released into the natural habitat.

Eco Shop: You can shop for Souvenirs and keepsakes like books, brochures, magazines, caps, T-shirts, etc. here

Oottupura (Cafeteria): A good place to have tea, coffee, meals, ice cream, and other light refreshments.
