Understanding Who Is Required to Pay Corporate Tax in the UAE
Understanding who is required to pay UAE Corporate Tax is essential for individuals and businesses aiming to remain compliant with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). With the recent implementation of UAE Corporate Tax alongside existing obligations under Value Added Tax (VAT) and Excise Tax, it is now more important than ever to know whether you or your company fall within the taxable category.
Every taxable person operating in the UAE — whether an individual or a company — is required to register for corporate tax in the UAE or VAT if they meet the relevant registration threshold. Under the current tax framework, any person conducting business activities in the UAE must register with the FTA once their annual turnover exceeds AED 375,000 within a calendar year, over the past 12 months, or is expected to reach this limit within the upcoming 30 days.
Let’s simplify this with an example.
Assume Hamdan is an individual providing media and digital marketing services in Dubai. During the financial year from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025, he earned AED 300,000 in revenue. In this case, Hamdan is not yet required to register for VAT or corporate tax in the UAE, since his turnover is below the mandatory registration threshold.
However, in the following year, his sales increased to AED 380,000. At this point, Hamdan is required to register for Value Added Tax (VAT), as he has exceeded the threshold set by the FTA. Yet, he is not required to register for UAE Corporate Tax, since natural persons (individuals) are only subject to corporate tax once their business turnover exceeds AED 1 million within a financial year.
This example highlights the importance of understanding corporate tax thresholds in the UAE and compliance obligations under UAE law. Many business owners mistakenly believe that VAT registration automatically means they must pay corporate tax, which is not always the case. Consulting a certified tax consultant in Dubai or visiting a professional tax office in the UAE can help assess your eligibility, ensure timely registration, and avoid potential tax penalties.
